Re:       Nominations to Judicial Qualification Commissions

Dear Justice Buckley,

I am the President of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY), a statewide organization with more than 3,500 members in local chapters across the State.  Two of our local chapters, the New York Women’s Bar Association and Bronx Women’s Bar Association, are situated within the Judicial Districts covered by the First Department.

We are firmly convinced of the importance of independent and thorough screening of candidates for judicial office, and we applaud the efforts of Chief Judge Judith Kaye and the Courts in the establishment of Judicial Qualification Commissions in each Judicial District across the State.

As the largest bar association in the country with a stated mission of advancing the status of women in the profession and in society, WBASNY has established a reputation with respect to judicial screening, and we offer a particular expertise, diversity of knowledge and deep experience when it comes to reviewing the qualifications of judicial candidates. We believe that WBASNY members have much to contribute to the new Judicial Qualification Commissions.

Therefore, when you act under the Rules of the Chief Administrative Judge to appoint representatives to the Judicial Qualification Commissions for the 1st and 12th Judicial Districts, we respectfully request that you designate a local women’s bar association chapter of WBASNY in these jurisdictions as one of the “four local bar associations” entitled to participate under Part 150.2(4).  We also request that you consider the individual members of those local bar associations when you designate your individual appointees to the Commissions.
